A friend of mine does this for a living. When its done with the right veneer the effect is beautiful. One suggestion I have is to first hold the veneer up to the light, if the light shines through to some extent and creates a sort of "glowing" look, its a good choice. If its basically opaque and dull then I would choose a different veneer. Once you have a "keeper", saturate the veneer with epoxy and clamp between two cauls with polyethelene plastic(the stuff you get at hardware stores in rolls) against the veneer. Once this sets you will have an even more translucent veneer that is stabilized and should hold up fine. You can also glue it to a thin sheet of plexiglass for even more strength. With the plexi backed veneer you would have to do it over a mold to get the shape you want. Without the plexiglass and just epoxy it should bend acceptably provided your radius isn't too tight.
