I'am getting ready to make a 54" x 133" conference table at a total tickness of 3-1/2". I was planning on torsion bx. construction, with 3/4" mdf top and bottom substrate and 2" ribs. The top and bottom panels will be banded with cherry and a 2" contrast band set in about 3/32" between the two. The finished top will be supported by two 30" cylinders. Am I asking for trouble trying to work with this much weight?

Am I asking for trouble trying to work with this much : weight? Why not use thinner Skinning for your top and bottom and do a triple layer with Honey-comb ? which will act as a torsion box? but lessen the weight slightly ! with only edge /perimeter solids of poplar .I would consider the honey comb route honeycomb.Good luck,Chris

I have done some large work with the bags from Vacupress (6' x 14' x 1 1/8" curved mdf panels and 4' x 14' x 2 1/4" solid core doors) and the weight is not really a consideration for the bag, as long as your table and form have adequate support. The concern I would have about your table is the flex you may experience along the long axis with only the two cylinders for support, depending on how far apart the cylinders will be placed under the table. You did not mention what material you are planning on using for the ribs, I would hope hardwood (poplar?). If I were going to build a table that large, I might consider dropping down to a thinner substrate (perhaps 1/2 or even 3/8 inch mdf) and making the ribs wider to provide more stiffness and reduce the weight some. Another option might be some kind of keel under the table between the two cylinders to provide some additional support.: I'am getting ready to make a 54" x 133" conference table at a total : tickness of 3-1/2".
