I use the vaacuum bag on pieses of "antique" furniture that I restore and sell. I use MDF with the slots cut every 6", 1/8 by 1/8". The cull its's self is 3' X 4' which will handle a buffet or dresser top no problem. My problem is when I try to use this cull on a chair bottom the cull breaks on the cut lines just outside of the chair bottom and I have to make another cull. Should I be using something else for a cull? Must I make different culls for each size item I veneer?Thank You,Ron

Dear Ron,First, I want to be clear on the terminology here. What I think you are calling a cull or caul, I would say is the platen. The board with the grooves in it for air evacuation. A caul would be the cover sheet that would go between the veneer and the bag. This can not overhang the work piece or it will snap off, this should not happen to the platen. If your chair bottom is flat on its underside I do not see why it is breaking. Is there more information you can give me to clarify this problem?SincerelyDarryl Keil: I use the vaacuum bag on pieses of "antique" furniture that I : restore and sell. : Dear Darryl, Thank you for your reply. I have indeed ben using a caul the same size as the platen. The platen breaks. I will make a new platen and use a caul the size of the chair bottom and try that. Thank you, Ron: First, I want to be clear on the terminology here.
