Dear Andy,You really need to use a rigid material for caul boards because flexible sheet goods like plasticor newspaper will not work. There are two reasons, first, when the bag sucks down ontothe panel it does not apply leveling pressure it just grabs whats in front of it. What this canmean is, if there's a slight hump in the veneer or a ornery spot the bag will grab and hold itbut not level it. A caul will force these area's down. Second, as the bag shrinks down it can sometimes develope small folds that may lay on the surface of your panel. Although theysuck up tight to themselves, it does leave a small gap without pressure that the glue cansense and puddle up at these locations. The caul will eliminate this situation also. For the cheapest caul material, I use 1/8" vinyl covered masonite, sometimes called Abatibi, used for low budget shower stall walls. Be aware that on really ornery veneers I usually useup to 1/2" material, but thats not often.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Instead of using Formica like matrerial for caul boards which is relatively expensive would it be ok: to use plastic bags or news paper or anythhing else like that? Isn't the caul in the case of: vacuum pressing just used to keep glue off the bag and not to spread pressure like it does: in other clamping situations?
