Subject : Different thickness veneers on same tabletop?

Darryl:I'm working with 1/64" thick Pommele Sapele & Mahogany but also want to incorporate Satinwood in the same tabletop, however the Satinwood is 1/32" thick. Should I backer veneer the 1/64" veneer to bring it up to the same thickness & then press it (Onto MDF)? (There would be no backer veneer on the 1/32" Satinwood.) What do you think? Thanks.Peter B.

Dear Peter,Im surprised you have Pommele that thin, but if you do, backing it is probably a good idea. Isuggest backing it with the Pommele veneer, that way it will be the same thickness and if yousand down close to the second layer it should still look good. No matter how you do it, makesure you use 1/32" or 1/16" black rubber over the veneers. This way, if there is any variationin final veneer thickness the rubber will assure a good pressing. Use a sheet of plastic betweenthe veneer and rubber because some glues will bond the rubber to the veneer. Roofers use1/16" rubber roofing, call around.sincerelyDarryl Keil: Darryl:: I'm working with 1/64" thick Pommele Sapele & Mahogany but also want to incorporate Satinwood in the : same tabletop, however the Satinwood is 1/32" thick. : I'm a novice at veneering and have never heard of the black rubber technique. Could you explain what it is?
