Subject : veneer over plastic laminate questions

Greetings - I am planning to renovate a bathroom built-in cabinet by veneering over the plastic laminate (which itself is over the usual particle board). What type of veneer (raw, paper-backed, self-stick) would serve best for this? I'm going to be using white oak, so there's quite a variety of types available (with a large price variation also!)Also, what sort of glue would be best? I can't seem to find a recommendation for a wood veneer-to-laminate bond, but I've read that when putting laminate over wood, contact cement does well. Would this work in reverse, so to speak? Thanks very much - Ken Platt

Dear Ken,Contact cement would be the quick and easy fix for your job but I think you would regret it.Using contact cement for raw or paper backed veneer does not offer a dependable bond over the long run, and often for the short run. No matter what you use the surface of the doors should be heavily sanded for a good glue bond. The two glues that will bond to a sanded laminate are epoxy or polyurethane, regular white and yellow glues will not work. I would recommend a paper backed veneer because the glue Im suggesting willlbleed through considerably making for a lot of work afterwards. To use these glues you needa press, vacuum or mechanical for a good bond.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Greetings - : I am planning to renovate a bathroom built-in cabinet by veneering : over the plastic laminate (which itself is over the usual particle : board).: What type of veneer (raw, paper-backed, self-stick) would serve best : for this?
