Subject : Water vs. Veneer

I just purchased your air operated vacupress and am getting ready to get started. I am confused on one issue. One book I read suggested using drafting tape to hold an inlay inplace prior to pressing. They suggested using masking tape because mineral spirits is used to remove it instead of water. On your video, you often used veneer tape and remove it with water. Does getting water on the veneer really pose a problem. I also noticed that some methods of flattening veneer require mixing water and glycerin. Wouldn't the water mixed with the glycerin raise the grain of the veneer. What do you reccomend?

Dear Richard,I think you will find regular veneer tape the best choice. Removing masking tape with thinner is not a pleasant experience, not to mention masking tape is thick enough to sometimes leave slight indentations in the veneer. The water used to remove the veneer tape you see in the video may raise the grain a bit but the veneer needs major sanding anyway, so its really not a problem.
