Subject : Veneering on melamine?

I have a home office with two built-in desks, bookshelves, and a credenza—all made out of white melamine. I would like to veneer over at least some of it to get rid of the white, hard-edged look. Some people have told me I can't do it; others that I can. I suspect the issue is the type of glue. I gather that pva glues will not work but others might. Would contact cement work? In short, can I apply veneer to melamine, and, if so, what problems should I be aware of? Thanks so much and Happy Holidays. Paul

No matter which glue you go with, PVA or contact cement, be sure to thoroughly scuff the surface, 80 grit on an orbital ought to do fine. If you haven't bought your veneer yet, paper backed would yield better results if you decide to go the contact cement route.: I have a home office with two built-in desks, bookshelves, and a credenza—all made out of white melamine. Dear Paul,You could apply the veneer to melamine using polyurethane glue, it should adhere just fine. That is assuming you have a way to press it.If not, then contact cement is probably the only way. The problem with this is contact cement will not properly hold veneer. You could make a two ply which is more stable and contact cement that on. I would also hard clamp the edges with the polyurethane (about a 1" band of glue with the contact cement in the center).SincerelyDarryl Keil: I have a home office with two built-in desks, bookshelves, and a credenza—all made out of white melamine.
