I am veneering a 6' diameter top made from lightweight mdf.The veneer itself is made up of about 70 varying sized pieces of different veneers. The mdf top is glued up from standard 4x8 sheet stock and has a seam in it.Even though the seam is smooth to the touch,do you think ,considering all the different woods and the seam in the mdf that I need a layer of crossbanding?thanks tom mortenson

Tom, Even though the seam feels even now, my concern is, what will happen once the moisture in the glue is introduced. I would be concerned that the MDF could swell differently and cause telegraphing of the seam, so just to be safe, I would use the crossbanding. Good luck, John.

Dear Tom,I strongly recommend you crossband the top as over time you could get a faint crack line in the veneer and finish where the mdf seam is. Make sure you do the same to the underside to balance the panel.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I am veneering a 6' diameter top made from lightweight mdf.The : veneer itself is made up of about 70 varying sized pieces of : different veneers. The mdf top is glued up from standard 4x8 sheet : stock and has a seam in it.Even though the seam is smooth to the : touch,do you think ,considering all the different woods and the seam : in the mdf that I need a layer of crossbanding?thanks tom mortenson
