Subject : Veneering a curved-faced harp

My husband and I are making a Gothic 31 -string harp from plans we bought from MusicMaker's kits http://www.musikit.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MK&Category_Code=H31The soundbox is shaped like a trapezoid from the front. The front and back are curved, about a 24" radius, around the base and are each 17" wide at the bottom. The height is 48" and only 4" wide at the top. The front and back are 1/8" aircraft birch ply and we are planning on putting a tiger curl maple veneer on the front and back.My question is can we veneer the soundbox after the front and back have been glued to the sides using a vacuum bag press? We are concerned this would crush the soundbox even though the sides are made of 3/4" solid maple and has three inner braces the go from side to side and along the back, not touching the front which is the soundboard.Or should we veneer these boards flat then put them on the soundbox frame? Thanks,Nel

You are right, the vacuum pressure inside of a vac bag can and will crush your harp. I made a form for a bowl back (clark neo-gothic)harp which was not braced properly. The sound of a months worth of work making the form was like a sonic boom when it let go. The cat sitting on the table next to my harp form and vac bag still hates me.Let me know if I can be of further help.TimP.S. Anyone wanting a very angry and frightened cat let me know.

Thanks Tim....sorry to hear about the cat. Yikes!Since we are making this harp with the use, primarily, of hand tools, it is still slow going so we haven't gotten to the veneering stage yet. I'll do an update as the time nears.Nel
