Subject : veneer hammer

hi i am in the process of veneering the out side of a cherry wood table in rose wood.when i first saw this process the chap doing it had what he called a veneer hammer. It had a wooden handel with a wooden head and a piece of brass inset in the head which is used to press the veneeer down.What i want to know is, is it called a veneer hammer and where can i get onethanks mark

Are you doing period reproductions?Since no experts took this one on, I'll offer my 2 cents.It's an obsolete tool, for an obsolete method. I suppose there is utility in using one, if one is interested in period restoration, using period techniques. Used for application of hide glue.I suggest looking into modern glues and tools. Your results will be much more satisfying.

Mark,As Carl suggests, you may want to consider more contemporary methods. Your post did not sound like you knew the process of using hot hide glue which is what a veneer hammer is used with. This is not a easy process.
