Tony,Personally, I would tape up the inlay with the main top and press it all at once. Your piece doesnt sound that big and getting it square should not be all that difficult provided the mahogany crotch is fairly flat. Putting in the inlay afterwards is more difficult in my opinion and one little slip with the router and you can ruin your panel. If your inlay is a different thickness make sure you place a sheet of 1/16" rubber between the veneer and your caul.As far as the solid border goes, I always prefer to attach it afterwards because the veneer is captured that way preventing possible damage down the road to those sensitive edges. I wouldnt say its the proper technique, as I have seen it both ways, I just prefer it that way.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I'm going to build a small hall table. I am planning on using mdf as a substrate for the top and applying a nie peice of croth : mahogany. I am thinking about adding an inlay between the field and the border of solid mahogany. What is the best method : to do that..before or after? The inlay will be small and I am concerned that it will be difficult to tape and also to get square : on the work piece. The stuff I have done thus far was either a floating panel or something I trimmed, so squareness was not : real critical. I'm assuming the idea of applying the solid border after the panel is veneered is the proper technique? Thansk : much.: Tony
