Hi all, would like some advice on veneering.Reason: I would like to veneer some kitchen unit doors, these are covered in a melamine material; very slightly textured, I am using a sycamore veneer 0.8mm thick. Not sure which type of adhesives to use and how to finish the edges and finally seal the veneer?Any advice would be gratefulBest regards Lee

First, I would NOT use contact cement, because the veneer will soon crawl away from the surface. If I absolutely had to do this job, I'd thoroughly roughen the surface with 60 grit sandpaper to give the adhesive something to grip. Plastics are difficult to glue because they're nonporous (among other factors). Then I'd use a structural epoxy such as WEST system. You'll likely get bleed-through, so you might want to roll a thin layer of epoxy after finish sanding, then scrape or sand that back to (or nearly to) the wood, as Daryl described in a previous post.If you want to veneer the edges, do those first. Otherwise you might consider leaving them as is if the color isn't too bad with the face veneer. What do you think, Daryl?: Hi all, would like some advice on veneering.: Reason: I would like to veneer some kitchen unit doors, these are : covered in a melamine material; very slightly textured, I am using a : sycamore veneer 0.8mm thick.: Not sure which type of adhesives to use and how to finish the edges : and finally seal the veneer?: Any advice would be grateful: Best regards Lee

Hi thanks for the reply. Taking everything you've said into account and from what i've read elsewhere, it may be easier to fit a new Kitchen, I don't want to do this and after six months it look bad, it's my reputation you see, I don't need to advertise all my work comes via word of mouth.Theres a lot more to this veneering game than meets the eye, but from this group i have learned quite a bit, and i think i've discovered a new hobby if nothing else I also have a new found appreciation of the work that goes into making veneered products.Best regards Lee
