I plan to veneer a panel with macassar ebony using Unibond 800 and wish to know if I need to take any special measures for a good glue up. I've heard black ebony is very oily and doesn't glue well, but I don't know if this applies to veneering or to macassar ebony. Thanks in advance,Roger

Roger,Unibond 800 works very well with oily wood, you wont have any problems with theMacassar ebony. One thing to be aware of is that Macassar has a tendency to have surface fissures (some flitches worse than others) that show up in through the finish. Within a year the surface can look unacceptable. I solve this by putting a coat of epoxy over the surface of the Macassar and then squeegee it off. Once it dries I sand until the epoxy is removed it from the surface. This locks down all the fissures and prevents the finish from becoming crackled.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Thank you for the suggestion to use epoxy to prevent fissures from appearing. I'm not familiar with this technique and couldn't find any mention of this in veneering books that I own. The only epoxy I'm familiar with comes in small tubes for repairing chairs, so could you recommend a brand/type that I should use and tell me if it should be thinned or not. Also, will this technique limit the kind of finish I can use (I was going to use a simple oil/varnish mix).

Thanks again,Roger
