I am interested in getting some veener to refinish my drumset. I have posted here before and it seems everyone recommends getting a paperbacked veneer, but at almost $300 for a 4x8 seems steep. SO I am wondering if I could get some raw flitch veneer and somehow glue a paper backer to the veneer using a large press (4x8 sheet of plywood maybe with something to flatten the veneer). I would love to spend the money for the vacuum but it would be used only once for bonding the veneer. Any info appreciated.

What species are you using? My local supplier sells 4X8 paper-backed in most standard species for between $40 and $50. Even with UPS and box charge it wont be anywhere near $300 unless you are using some exotic species, and even then I would be surprised if it's anywhere near that high.

: What species are you using?I'm using either a BE maple or possibly a Tamo Ash. I also saw some KARELIAN BIRCH that is really nice, but it's raw w/o paper backing. I'm not sure what's the best way to go here. The raw stuff seems to look like a better deal, but I'm worried about trying to get it to stick to a round cylinder without having to use a vacuum press.
