I should be receiving my Compact 100 any day now and then I'll be ready to tackle my first veneering project. I was thinking that I would glue two 3/4" sheets of MDF together (1-1/2" thick total) for the substrate and then apply the veneer (I'm going to resaw my own soft curly maple and do some wenge inlays). My question is: with an 1-1/2" substrate, do I still need to veneer both sides to prevent warpage? Thanks!

Pete,If you were using veneer of normal manufactured thickness (1/24" or thinner), I'd say you could probably get away veneering only one side. Your resawn veneer will be considerably thicker than that and, in northern latitudes especially, will generate plenty of force between summer and winter, whether expanding or contracting. With all the work you're doing by resawing veneer, you should probably play it safe and veneer both sides. You might also ask yourself if you really need 1 1/2" of headboard!Thomas

: Thomas,: Thanks for the reply. I think you're right, 1-1/2" is probably overkill. I'll probably either go with (1) 3/4' or (2) 1/2" glued together MDF. I think I'll veneer on both sides just to make sure it's done right. Again, Thanks.
