How would you approach this? King size bed, rails are 9" wide and veneered in crotch mahogany with the grain direction of both horizontal(same). Thickness is around 1 3/4". For the core, would you go with mahogany and then veneer right on top- grain direction is the same... Or, I have another job happening first which is rift or quartered white oak. I'm sure I will have left over stock. If I go with the oak core, then a layer of vertical layed up mahogany(cross band) then crotch on top? Which one is safer? My cross band would probably thick material 1/16".

The only time bed rails are visible in our house is when the bedding is in the wash (lol).

It has always been my understanding that veneer on a functional piece should never run to the edges because of the risk of chipping (like formica and similar laminates).

If you veneer the two 9" wide surfaces and trim flush you could then glue a 3/16" or 1/4" thick piece of solid wood on the long edges to protect the veneer edges. I think Craig T once described here a "french edge" which would be another option - glue a strip of solid wood in a 1/8" square rabbet along each long edge. The solid strip could be the same type of wood as the veneer or something different as an accent.

Not sure what to suggest for the core - in Cincinnati south America mahogany lumber is no longer available. Not sure how similar in seasonal movement khaya and sapelle (African "mahoganies" are to south American. Also not sure for that matter from what species of tree your crotch mahogany was slliced.
