I am building an extension dining table for a customer. I prefer veneering on MDF, but they have expressed concern over the weight. Ultralight MDF would seem like a good alternative, but I don't know what drawbacks there are regarding durability. It will have a solid wood edge. In the past I have glued in solid wood plugs for screws to get a better bite. 3/4" V/C ply is a possibility but does not stay as flat. It will get two ply front and bak faces and be glued with Unibond.

Ultralight can be problematic to glue to because of its higher porosity. I've had a number of customer have trouble with it. If you do decide to use it I would suggest a sealer coat of 60% water, 40% yellow glue. This seems to do the trick for good bonding.
