Since the vacuum in the press is the same everywhere does it make any difference whether the face veneer is on the top or the bottom of the press? The reason I ask is if I have brittle crotch veneer that chips when I cut it why not cut it a little larger than the substrate and use a router with a straight bit after the veneer has cured. If the veneer overhangs the substrate and is on top, the vacuum press would snap it.
Thanks John

Top or bottom is fine, either way. Each person has their preference. Yes, you are right that face veneer face allows for an overhang. You can also use a thicker caul on top and allow the caul and veneer to overhang. Rule is the caul can overhang the panel up to its thickness. A 1/4" caul can overhang up to 1/4".
