Subject : veneering natural veneer to PVC cylinder

Hi, I am wanting to veneer natural olive ash burl veneer to a PVC cylinder. I was going to use Wilsonart 700 spray adhesive. I was going to use water based Minwax polyurethane. However, the veneer supplier said, "natural veneer with a contact adhesive can sometimes split or delaminate. Plus, the olive ash burl may not work with that type of glue. Spray contact adhesives are designed to be used with backed veneers and not natural veneers. You may want to practice with some scraps before going full into the project. If you are using lacquer for a finish or any finish that has a solvent, it can bleed through the veneer and begin to dissolve the contact cement."

What should I use for glue and will water based poly be okay?

Thanks, Damian

Damian,

Epoxy is your best bet for a PVC cylinder and raw veneer. The problem is you need some kind of press, a vacuum press would be ideal, to do the job. If not then you will need to get a backed veneer to get good results with contact cement, preferably a wood on wood backed veneer.
