Subject : Pump recycles excessively

When connected to a bag my pump recycles every 30 seconds. After unhooking the hose from the bag and putting my thumb on the hose end it recycles every 5 seconds. If I put one thumb on the hose end and plug the threaded hole in the muffler, the pump runs continousley, up to 20 mm Hg. Am I missing a part in the muffler??

If you're putting your finger over the exhaust muffler then you are blocking the flow of air from getting out of the pump which is why it wont go any higher than 20 HG. As far as the 5 second leak you may simply have a small chip out of the oring in the hose although I cant be sure as you didnt say which model you have.

Mostly its best to call with pump issues because diagnosing the problem over a forum is difficult to do. A phone conversation is much more effective.
