Darryl -

A question about the use of the ¾” honeycomb:

Can I sandwich this material on top and bottom with ¼” veneered MDF panels, ringed by a ¾”x ¾” perimeter poplar band to form a net 16” deep by 48” long shelf that would not sag supporting books?

Intent is to use this size shelf as an adjustable unit in a library case (supported on two ends by shelf pins). I would also use a lipping of solid Alder on the front edge of the shelf. Lipping would be "T" shaped with the top of the "T" facing the 1-1/4" thickness of the shelf and the leg of the "T" sandwiched between the edges of the 1/4" panels. Would press it all in the bag.

Thanks.

Craig,

Although a honeycomb torsion box is fairly strong, a 48" self piled with books will sag some. If you did double 3/4" honeycomb with a 1/8" seperater sheet inbetween, now that would be pretty strong but obviously your overall thickness would increase by almost an 1".
