Well, Igor and I have been bubbling and brewing in the dungeons. Although we have not yet created any new life forms we have developed some great stuff with glue.
First, about Unibond 800, you are correct, we have made some new changes. Very positive ones, in my opinion. I am very aware of the green movement and have struggled with providing a glue that offers the best bond for veneering while being enviornmentally conscious. This can be difficult as these two things dont tend to work together with catalytic glues. I think we have made significant progress in this area by reducing the formaldehyde by 90% in Unibond 800 from 4 % to less than .4% AND keeping the same level of performance. The "whats new" page will be updated with more information by the end of the week. One thing to be aware of is, we recommend folks NOT use the old catalyst with the new Unibond as the chemical reaction is slowed way way down.
We have also discontinued the white catalyst as so few people order it. Instead we are offering a concentrated white tint as well as a dark brown one. This means that someone can get the new medium hardener with the tints and create just about any shade desired. The dark hardener is still availible and the dark tint can make the color good for woods like ebony and wenge.
As far as a new Unibond, yes, we are about to introduce a one part PVA glue called Unibond "One". The idea was to create a one part glue with as much of the desired properties possible for veneering without having to mix two parts together. Although not to the same level as Unibond 800, it will have an extra hard glue line, as hard as we could make a PVA, long open work time, easy to spread, with a bleed through blocker built in. The tints can also be used with this glue as well. It should be out and availible in another week or so. When the performance level of a urea glue is not needed I think this will be a great alternative for veneering and bent laminations.
I have to say I've had a lot of fun playing chemist for the last few months although if I do one more glue test I'm going scream and pull my hair out. Its good to be done.
