Subject : another Telegraphing question...

We have to make up some heavy slabs for a piece. 1" ultralight mdf laminated together to achieve a 2" thickness. Slabs are approximately 3' x 4'. My question is concerning the edge treatment. I might have the opportunity to use 1/16" thick veneer (Mahogany) if I want. I'm curious if the consensus is to still cross-band underneath, in order to avoid any of that joint line from telegraphing through or if the 1/16" thickness is enough to prevent this. Also, if we were to resort back to standard veneer thickness, will a simple cross-band (opposing grain direction) be fine to avoid this seam telegraphing through or is there something more I need to consider? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Steven,

You should be fine with 1/16" edge banding. Using a rigid glue to laminate the two sheets will help to prevent the cold creep issue you get with a PVA glue that pushes out at the glue joint. Two ply usually works fine as well.
