I need to make 8 small legs & veneer with B. E. maple. I've got the video that shows Darryl doing the cylinder so I'm wondering if I can apply that idea to something as small as an oval crossection say 3.5 x 4.5? The other question is can I do it on solid hardwood or would it have to be mdf or ply?

Mike,

You can definitely do a leg with those diameters. I did one down to 1 1/4" so you should be fine. Doing it on solid is perfectly fine as well. One additional technique I have added on cylinders since making that DVD is a feathered final seam instead of a butt seam as you see in the DVD.

Rather than knifing through both layer to make the return seam, feather one of the edges so it tapers to nothing. Do this before you glue it to the leg. When you get to the second pressing, the unfeathered veneer edge gets a little glue on the underside and laps over the feathered one by, lets say about 1/2". After its all glued up scrape and sand the overlapping veneer until the edges is tapered down and smooth. I think you'll find this easier to do than the butt seam and looks quite good.

I'd to a test piece to see how you like it and to get the hang of it.
