Subject : Plastic Back as a backer.

Hi guys.

I am doing a 4x8 conference table over 1" mdf ultralite. I have some extra stock of thin plasti back in 4x8 sheets from Oakwood that I would like to use as a backer instead of veneer. The thickness matches regular raw veneer at .025. I am using unibond 800 as the glue. There won't be any aprons or structure underneath to keep from warping, just 2 pedestal bases.

1)Is it safe to use the plastiback on a panel of this length, or should I use raw veneer as a backer? I use plasti back on smaller tables all the time, but will the 4x8 size warp?

2) Should I add a .75x2.00 bracing strip underneath just as warp insurance?

Thx, Gregg Novosad.

Gregg,

In my opinion, this balance thing is not a perfect science and sometimes things work OK not being perfectly balanced and another time its a problem. Clearly the rigidity of the plastic laminate is different than the veneer. Its a big table and not a lot of support. For me I wouldn't take the chance with the plastic.

That's my call.
