I would like to place a marquetry design on the drawer fronts of a jewelry box. I hesitate to use plywood or MDF because of the edge and dovetails. Can I crossband two layers of veneer (at right angle grain) and glue this to a maple drawer front and have a good chance that it will not crack or come loose with time? If I put this on both sides of the maple, will it keep the maple from expanding and contracting with the seasons?

Carl

Carl,

white oak, mahogany and polar are better choices to veneer over. quarter cut if you can get it. the method you described will be fine. and yes , you should veneer both sixes and two ply as well.
