Has anybody tried a stroke sander for the rough sanding of a veneer panel like a cabinet door or table top? I have used a hand held belt sander with success, but with great nerve and care. Using an orbital doesn't get the surface flat. What is the alternative besides a expensive wide belt, although a stroke sander is not cheap.
Thanks for your comments.

*I* don't own or use a stroke sander, but I know of at least one local cabinet maker who specialize in very high end, almost exclusively veneered, work and uses a stroke sander to very good effect for his veneered work.
