I have been laying up burl that has a lot of small holes and individually filling each hole with Famowood wood filler with good results.
I have some more burl with numerous holes and was wondering if instead of filling each hole I could use grain filler in the conventional manor over the entire piece of burl. I would then sand the grain filler off the surface. This appears to be a much faster way of filling the holes?

Thanks
Howard

Howard,

I seriously doubt that grain filler would have the ability to fill holes in veneer, besides I find the stuff absolutely miserable to work with. Have you ever tried it?

I dont know what kind of glue you are using but Unibond 800 or any urea resin glue should easily fill these small holes during pressing. Just tint the glue with aniline dye to match the veneer and this method will do the job nicely provided you're using standard commercially sliced veneer, not shop resawn veneer.
