I've been asked to replace the veneer on the surface of an old treadle sewing machine top. It was a two ply with at least the top layer quarter sawn white oak (QSWO). I'm going to sand off the old veneers and plan to put back another cross-banded two ply because of the hardwood edging has something like a cove pattern. I'm concerned that as I try to trim/sand a single layer of QSWO veneer back to the edging there'll be some breaking/chipping, and hoping that a two ply will be less likely to break/chip.
My plan is to press the two ply first with urea formaldehyde, then immediately press that two ply to the prepared top. It would be interesting to see how stiff the two ply becomes overnight with full curing, but probably not that interesting.
I'll first try the process with some scrap veneer and substrate, with a cove molded directly into the sheet good edge. Any suggestions/tips to include in the trial run would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
