Subject : More on canvas cauls for marquetry

Thanks all for the replies to my previous post on using heavy canvas as an upper caul for marquetry using different thickness veneers. I tried it, and it seems to work very well. So well, in fact, that I'm wondering why I can't use it for regular veneer pressing as well. You can fold the canvas to any shape so you don't have to cut custom upper cauls all the time. Is there any downside to using canvas (or gum rubber) all the time?

Well, you mean replacing the hard upper caul completely?

I wouldn't recommend it. One vital purpose of having an upper caul of hard material is that it will remain flat and get rid of any bubbles or rippling.

Without a hard upper caul, you will end up with areas that are high spots, and areas that are low spots...not flat. The caul takes the bag pressure and equalizes it across the span of the piece. A bag will not press perfectly flat on it's own.

(I know this because I tried it once, thinking that upper cauls were unnecessary....they are! I had to take the entire table top to a wide belt sander and start over with that side.)
