Hi
I'm about to do another car door, this time in bird's eye maple. I have no experience with bird's eye maple. The sheets I'm about to get are wavy, suppose all bird's eye is like that.

How to get them strait and flat and what glue to use when glueing it to painted metal?
Is neoprene any good, and how to prevent the veneer from growing bubbles over time?

Im worried that when metal stretches in hot summer day that veneer would crack or grow bubbles.
Is it better to glue the birds eye directly to metal or should I put 2-3 layers of fiberglass in between to compensate for the stretching?

Thanks

Nick

Nick,

I wouldn't put layers of fiberglass between the veneer and metal but I would lay down a backer veneer first and then your birdseye maple. Run the backer veneer ninety degrees to the birdseye. Epoxy is going to be your best glue choice for this project. If glued properly with good uniform pressure you will not see any bubbles, even years down the road.

Birdseye veneer often has a bit of waviness to it but it really shouldn't be a problem unless its real bad.

Sincerely
