Wood carver down the street is thinking of making one of his headboards with a curly maple look rather than cherry or walnut this time. The border of the headboard is carved and the middle portion flat (but not a frame and panel look). He thinks he'd like the look of curly maple, but wants to avoid the cost of 8/4 curly maple. Granted, with a solid maple core there would not be a curl look to the exposed edge, but that will be carved and otherwise molded anyway. His question to me was whether raw curly maple veneer could be applied to a solid maple substrate if the grain of the two were running the same direction. Has anyone tried this before?
Thanks.
