Subject : Curly Maple Veneer Over Solid Maple?
Posted : 2006-10-18 8:26 PM
Post #33414

Wood carver down the street is thinking of making one of his headboards with a curly maple look rather than cherry or walnut this time. The border of the headboard is carved and the middle portion flat (but not a frame and panel look). He thinks he'd like the look of curly maple, but wants to avoid the cost of 8/4 curly maple. Granted, with a solid maple core there would not be a curl look to the exposed edge, but that will be carved and otherwise molded anyway. His question to me was whether raw curly maple veneer could be applied to a solid maple substrate if the grain of the two were running the same direction. Has anyone tried this before?

Thanks.

Don,

As long as you run the grain of the veneer and solid in the same direction like you mentioned you'll be fine.
