I have inlaids some leaves of holly veneer into some claro walnut background. This is my first time using holly veneer.I plan to use unibond medium catalyst and the blocker. I hope this will minimize darkening of the holly. Any other suggestions for preserving the whiteness of the holly?
After the glue-up,during sanding, should I try to protect it from the walnut dust by shellac or some other sealer ?
Thanks for any advice.

Kelly,

I would use the Unibond 800 with the dark catalyst. The catalyst color is useful on open grained woods where the glue will fill the pours. Holly is a closed grain wood so the color of the catalyst will not have an effect. The walnut being an open grained wood will be better using the dark catalyst. The dark catalyst will not darken the holly.

As far as sanding the two veneers side by side I have not had a problem with this. I just use a concentrated blast of compressed air on the lighter wood and all the darker dust particles are removed.

My suggestion is to make a sample with these two veneers and run through the entire process from gluing to sanding just to be sure you are pleased with the results.

Sincerely
