Bought a veneer stitcher after having a lot of ghosting problems with veneer tape. Scrub it with water or not, and sand it like crazy, when I applied aniline dyes (which I use a lot), there would be the tape lines and holes ... very frustrating. But then I was having some similar problems with the veneer thread. No problem when just applying lacquer, seams looked perfect. But with aniline dyes, thread ghosting was happening a fair bit. And no evidence whatsoever until the dye is applied - didn't matter if we checked with denat alcohol, naptha, or whatever. And can't really sand once dyed either!
Now we did some tests, after talking to Darryl, with some different solvents, and lacquer thinner dissolves the hot melt glue that is used to glue the fiberglass thread to the veneer. Which explains, of course, why there wasn't any thread ghosting when just shooting lacquer. So now a quick scrape with a cabinet scraper removes the bulk of the veneer thread, and then a quick scrub with lacquer thinner before sanding ... wow, this has made it very quick and easy! And no ghosting whatsoever once the dyes are applied. Just thought I'd pass it along in case anyone else was having similar problems.
