Subject : Support Table for Fliptop Press

I just purchased a 5x10 press. Now I need to build the support table. I have a few questions that I am hoping I can get answered here.

1) The table directions indicate using kiln-dried 2x6's for the frame. I live in a coastal region with high humidity and am concerned about not being able to find good, straight lumber. I thought of laminating my own 2x6's from doubled up 3/4" plywood. I can control the straightness of the plywood better than I can control the lumber. Thoughts?

2) Does anyone have any pictures of how they built the legs and storage underneath their table?

3) Does anyone have any good ideas on how to level the legs of the table on an uneven floor?

Thanks,

Charles

Charles,

I think you would be fine with standard 2x6's for the table construction. Of course furniture grade lumber would be superior but there is a way to make the 2x6's work.

I put 1x1 cleats along the top edge of the 2x6 apron pieces and screw the table top down from the underside using these cleats. You can shim between the table top and the cleats to get everything nice and level even if the 2x6's aren't. Put the shims right beside the screws instead of the screws threw them. If over time the 2x6's move you can loosen the screws and adjust the shims to re-level the top. This method has worked quite well for me.

Sincerely
