Have some layups to do and plan on veneering 1/4" hardwood and 1/8" masonite on either side of 1/2" MDF substrate. Will this work, and are platens a necessity when veneering veneers this thickness is a press.

Ken,

The answer is no, you don't need them, but I think you mean caul not platen. Cauls are sheets that go on top of the veneer. A platen is the board you put grooves in for air evacuation and do all you pressing on top of.

Be aware that if you put different thickness as well as different kinds of materials on each side of your 1/2" core you will most likely get warping. General rule for keeping panels flat is same material and same thickness on each side.
