Subject : Will Clamps Crush a HoneyComb Torsion Box?

I'd like to have a fairly light 3'x6' surface I could set up on sawhorses as needed for an auxilliary gluing/assembly table. Plastic laminate surfaces to resist glue would add weight, so ideally the surface would be 1/4" plywood skins on 3/4" or 1" honeycomb core. Again to reduce weight the solid frame around the honeycomb core would be no wider than 1".

During glueup it is not uncommon to use F style or K bar clamps to hold a piece to the tabletop, and with only a 1" wide frame the clamp head of F style bar clamps could be over the honeycomb core. Has anyone any experience with this type of assembly table top? It would be several hours of work to make a complete sample to experiment with the clamps. Thanks.

Don,

The simple answer to this one is, no.

The weight of your clamps will definitely not affect the honeycomb at all, especially with 1/4" skins.
