I recently veneered indian rose wood to the finished end of two cabinets made from baltic birch. I used unibond 800 mixed 1:8 and waited over 24hrs and then went to finish it with minwax polyurethane semi gloss, and had a bad reaction. The minwax never set and was left in a waxxy state (even after 3 days or so) that i then had to scrape and sand off. I feel that the minwax was good as it cured on everything else i used it on, but these two finished ends. I tryied sanding the veneer with 220 and a little acetone to clean it (recomended by minwax) that did not work. I then shellaced the ends and then urethaned. this worked on one cabinet but not on the other. Are there any other suggestions, as i still have to do all the doors for this project. (different glue? different finish? any ideas.)

Joshua,

Ah, the wonderful world of finishing. We all have these finishing mysteries, and sometimes nightmares, that never get solved.

I highly doubt the Unibond 800 is causing this as its a catalytic glue which means ones the chemical reaction is complete it becomes inert.

I'm wondering if the rosewood itself is causing the problem. Have you veneered and finished anything else with this specific batch?

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
