I have never used honeycomb before and I have a very basic question. I want to make a honeycomb panel with mahogany edges. Is the procedure to make a skeleton with mahogany edges and then fill in the skeleton with honeycomb, then veneer both top and bottom with mahogany in my vacupress?
If this is what is done, what joinery would you use to make the skeleton?
thanks, john

John,

It would go something like this. Make edging strips to go around the perimeter of your panel the same thickness as the honeycomb. I like to pre-glue these to one of the two skins. Once this has dried, roll glue on the skin with the edging already attached, drop in the honeycomb, roll glue on the other skin and press up this sandwich. If you want your finished panel to have mahogany edges with the veneer going over them I would glue them to the pressed up honeycomb panel and then as the last step veneer both sides.

Personally I would keep this mahogany edging 1/4" or less and be sure to glue it up with a rigid glue like urea resin or polyurethane, not a white or yellow glue. You don't want the cold creep of this glue line telegraphing through your veneer over time.

Sincerely
