I'm just getting started with my vacuum press and have been having some problems getting the amount of glue correct. I've been getting bleed through using Unibond so I tried using a cold press veneer glue. It helped because it is so thick but is created ripples in the veneer along some of the grain lines. The veneer is .021" thick cherry and I'm applying it over sanded birch plywood. I apply glue to just the plywood side and have tried using a 1/16" notched spreader and a foam brush but still think I'm using too much for this thin veneer. Any rules of thumb you can suggest with Unibond and/or cold press glues? The cold press glue looks like it absorbed better in some areas but not in others so the glue had no where to go and forced the veneer up along the grain. I appreciate the help.

Bruce,

From your description I would say you are definitely over gluing. You should not get any bleed through on cherry and wrinkling of veneer with a yellow glue is a sure sign of too much glue.

I suggest switching to a foam roller for applying glue. You'll have much more control this way.
