Subject : Grain orientation on plywood?

When gluing solid wood veneer to a plywood substrate, should the veneer grain be perpendicular or parallel to the grain on the top layer of plywood, or does it not matter?

In general you run it perpendicular but its not critical in this situation because its a thin layer thats already perpendicular to the sub layers.
