I'm just starting out in veneering. I bought some carpathian elm veneer, which has hundreds of little "eyes" in it, each smaller than a BB. As the wood dried, each eye shrunk slighly and has an itty bitty "X" shaped check in it so if you hold it up to the light, you can see light through many of them. Very tiny cracks, but they are there. Two questions: 1) Will these be an issue with gluing - how do I avoid major squeeze out through those tiny cracks? 2) Once glued, do you fill those with grain filler like you would use on normal mahogany or walnut, or do I use something else?

Doug,

You can fill afterwards but I like to use the glue to fill these areas during pressing. Use either a urea resin or epoxy as these glues have the capacity to fill small imperfections like the ones you have. If needed, tint the glue to match the veneer. If you use the Unibond 800 with the dark catalyst it should be a good match. You're not going to be able to stop the bleed through, you just scrape and sand it off afterwards.

Sincerely
