Subject : Can I save this panel? Re-veneer?

This is a fairly small panel in a piece of furniture. It will be very visible from both sides. A side is veneered in sapele pommele. B side is quartersawn etimoe. I have almost sanded through an area on the sapele face. I think I'm beginning to see substrate shining through. I would scrap the whole thing and start over, but I am out of the etimoe veneer. I still have plenty of sapele, in sequence.

I am trying to get my courage up to attempt a re-do on that one face. I have a Performax sander that will surface something to a pretty close tolerance. I am considering skimming that face off and pressing new veneer. Any one of you guys ever tried such a thing? Anyone have any alternative ideas? It is great to have this forum to run to when you get in a bind. Thanks Darryl!!!!

I see no reason that you couldn't do exactly what you plan.

I would take a piece of veneered plywood, and see how well tuned your Performax is first, however. Sand very lightly, just like you will your piece, and see how even the sanding is, and how flat the piece is from side to side...use calipers to measure how flat your sander is sanding.

A couple of tests with veneered plywood, or something similar that has one sheet on veneer on the face will tell you if your Performax can do this, and it should perform perfectly...if not, adjust the sander.

let us know how it turns out.
