I see no reason that you couldn't do exactly what you plan.
I would take a piece of veneered plywood, and see how well tuned your Performax is first, however. Sand very lightly, just like you will your piece, and see how even the sanding is, and how flat the piece is from side to side...use calipers to measure how flat your sander is sanding.
A couple of tests with veneered plywood, or something similar that has one sheet on veneer on the face will tell you if your Performax can do this, and it should perform perfectly...if not, adjust the sander.
