I have recieved a commision to build a big dining table 5'0" x 12'0". I plan to build a torsion box core out of 3/4" x 3" poplar using 3/4" resin impregnated honeycomb infill and two 1/2" MDF skins. The table will be broken into two lengthwise wedge shapes, 20"W on the narrow end and 40"W on the wide end. After pressing up the torsion boxes and trimming them to size I plan on pressing the top and bottom veneers one at a time in seperate pressings using unibond. The pieces will recieve a solid wood edging. The face veneer is a flatsawn mahogany. Is this approach feasible? What kind of vacuum press do you recommend? I read in another forum entry that you recommended having another company press up a full size two-ply veneer first and then press that in the shop. Do I dare try that myself in one of your large bags? Am I crazy?

Joseph,

If you have never veneered before this table might be a big bite to start with but if you've got some basic veneering under your belt then go for it. You don't have to do the two ply option but it will make the veneering end of it a bit easier.

I would suggest making up a small sample of your torsion box just to get a feel of it. It is a pretty big table and a test run always give you valuable information.

In terms of getting a vacuum press, any auto cycling system that is at least 4cfm or larger would be my recommendation. As far as the bag, get at least 30mil vinyl and you may want to consider 30mil polyurethane although that depends on how much you plan on using it in the future. Polyurethane is rather expensive.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
