If anyone hasn't seen them the two DVD's are great, especially for someone just getting started. I am looking forward to doing some practice pieces as Darryl recommended.

Question: Is there a trick to making the pie shaped veneer pieces used in circular work? How do you trim the veneer to a round shape before glue up if you are making a round piece--especially circles within circles--eg. a circular table with radial bookmatched veneer with a contrasting wood around the ourside?

Jim:

Email me and I'll send you some info on cutting the starburst pieces. You can also start with an article by Frank Pollaro in Fine Woodworking March 95 pp 40-4. To make a round center with a round decorative band and round outer edging I would use the technique demonstrated in Paul Schurch's video. You can order it at www.schurchwoodwork.com. His technique is amazingly easy to use. If you wish to preview first, he wrote on article in Fine Woodworking July/Aug 2003 pp 74-9.
