I have recently gotten myself involved with veneering. I have done maybe 4 or five veneering projects. I have only used paperback veneers. With this I could use advice as I have never observed a professional. I have applied veneer on curved faces and arcs using a small plastic edge trimmer, 3-4 coats of contact cement and apply with j-roller and rubber mallet. So far, I have met with success. But my biggest problem thus far is making the edges appear seamless. What is the best way to rough cut the edges without leaving behind annoying contact cement or damaging the other piece? Also, how do I flush out and finish the edge? The edge of these paper veneers is very frustrating to sand away. Can any one help?!

Thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy,

A couple of suggestions.

If you use raw veneer edging instead of paperbacked you would eliminate the sanding problems. Also, I would switch to yellow glue instead of contact cement and clamp the edging on. If clamping is too difficult because of the curved shape of your edge you could use the iron on technique where you brush a coat of yellow glue on the edging veneer and the panel, let the glue dry and then iron it on. I dont recommend this method for large surfaces but for edging its acceptable when you cant clamp it.

Sincerely
