I am experienced in veneering, but have never used 2 ply veneering. I have several questions related to 2 ply veneering:

1. What are the advantages of using 2 ply veneer; what common problems does 2 ply veneering help you avoid encountering? Under what circumstances is 2 ply the way to go?

2. To correctly use 2 ply veneering on a flat pie matched tabletop, should I:

a. Cut and assemble the pie match, and then press it to a backer veneer. or...

b. Press the leaves of my face veneer to a backer veneer, and then cut these 2 plys to size for the pie match, and assemble it.

Thanks in advance for wise advice.

Warren,

On your radial match, assemble it first and then glue it to the backer veneer.

Two ply has a number of benifits and I use it mostly on curved work. I will lay up the two ply and then once it comes out of the press examine it carefully for any spots that did not press completely. Two ply is the only glue up that allows you to repair the face veneer from the back side. Also, since the veneer is now stablized I can sand it in the flat before apply it to my curved panel. If for any reason I dont get perfect adhesion between the two ply and my panel its not such a problem. I could have an area the size of a quarter and not be concerned since two ply is stable enough to span this without requiring repair work.

A number of folks use two ply when pressing up difficult veneers like mahogany crotch claiming the fizzuring that happens up the flame is greatly reduced by crossbanding before pressing it to the panel.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
