Subject : Mixing Paperbacked Veneer and Raw Veneer?

Two questions regarding use of paperbacked veneer. I am new to veneering with a vac press and need to produce quite a few panels in a short amount of time. Paperbacked veneer would certainly save a lot of time. However, I don't want to compromise my door and wall panels. My main concern is the long term adhesion charactereistic of the paperbacked stuff.

First, in making two-ply, is it OK to use 10 mil paperbacked veneer as the base layer and raw veneer for the face?

Second, is it acceptable practice to press paperbacked veneer onto both sides of a 1/4 inch MDF core in order to build a little extra thickness before applying raw face veneers on both sides?

James,

Check out a post close to this one called "2 ply warping/cracking issue", it directly addresses your two ply question.

As far as paperbacks durability I find its fine and your correct, using it does save a lot of time. I dont use it much but its not for the reasons you are considering.

As long as you apply the paperback to both sides its fine to use it to build up thickness.
