I did exactly what you are referring to on this project here....

Pay particular attention to the middle drawer....that's the one with the veneered face.
The drawer that you see here is 4 1/2" high.
Here's the strategies that I used.
(1) Use quartersawn wood for your substrate...the movement will be less.
(2) I did use a backer veneer. Not sure if it was necessary, but I've had no problems with it..I think it's a good idea.
(3) Cut your DT's carefully....take your time, and make sure that your chisel blows are only little taps....work slow.
Your drawer is a lot wider than mine, however....I think that it will work, but it really depends on humidity in your area of the country, and how drastic that change can be from season to season.
I'm sure that there will be some other input, but that's mine so far...
